Volvo bus and coach engines – injection systems from D7C to D13C
Volvo Buses is a global manufacturer of city buses, articulated buses and premium coaches. In Poland, the B7R (regional bus), B9TL (double-decker), B12B and B13R (long-distance coaches) and 8700 (intercity) models are used in Poland. The coach line includes9700 and9900 – premium vehicles with D13C and D16G engines.
Volvo bus engines from the D7, D9, D12 and D13 series use Unit Injector systems (Delphi E3 and Bosch unit injectors) or newer Common Rail systems (Bosch CRI2/CRI3). A-Core Diesel Service supports both types - both unit injectors and CR injectors - with pre/post test documentation on a Bosch EPS 815 table.

Specifications of Delphi E3 unit injectors in Volvo buses
Delphi E3 and BEBE series unit injectors used in Volvo buses are a different type of injection system than Common Rail - each cylinder has its own integrated UI driven by a camshaft. The injection pressure generated directly in the UI reaches up to 2,200 bar. Delphi E3 is considered one of the more precise and efficient Unit Injector systems, but requires appropriate engine oil (VDS-4 / ACEA E4 standard) and regular filter replacement.
The most common problems with Delphi E3 in Volvo buses:
- Piston and cylinder wear (clearance above the standard of 2 μm after 600,000–800,000 km)
- Damage to the BEBE control valve and solenoid valve
- Leakage of the shaft seal and oil leakage into the injection chamber
- Contamination of UI inlet filters by bad engine oil
Symptoms of damage to the injection system in Volvo buses
Symptoms requiring diagnosis
- Uneven engine operation at idle speed – especially after cold start in pit lanes
- Cabin oscillations and vibrations – visible even when stopped at a bus stop
- Black or gray smoke – when leaving a stop or when revving
- Increase in fuel consumption – monitored by Volvo Dynafleet fleet systems
- Error codes in Volvo VCADS PRO – indication of a specific cylinder or UI bank
- Difficult starting – especially on winter mornings when the bus stands overnight without heating
- Metallic clatter – audible from the outside when starting cold, disappearing after warming up
VCADS PRO error codes – Volvo D9B / D12D / D13 bus engines
| SPN/FMI Code | Description | Engine |
|---|---|---|
| SPN 651–656 FMI 5/6/7 | UI cyl. 1–6 – lack / short circuit / too high current | D9B / D12D / D13A |
| SPN 636 FMI 2 | Camshaft synchronization - UI error | D9B / D12D |
| SPN 094 FMI 1 | Fuel pressure low - UI fuel system | all |
| SPN 3251 FMI 0 | DPF – regeneration impossible (no power with UI) | D13B / D13C E5/E6 |
| SPN 2791 FMI 9 | UI dose correction out of range – cyl. 1–6 | D13B / D13C |
| SPN 190 FMI 0 | Engine speed exceeded - UI controller error | D12D UIDR |
Regeneration of Delphi E3 unit injectors – A-Core procedure
Stage 1 – Pre-test and BEBE identification
Each Delphi E3 unit injector is identified with a BEBE number engraved on the body. On the Bosch EPS 815 test bench (with a module for Delphi E3 BEBE) we perform a pre-test: starting dose, idle dose, full load dose, back-leak and response time of the solenoid valve. The pre-test results are the basis for assessing the extent of recovery.
Stage 2 – Disassembly and tolerance check
We dismantle Delphi E3 unit injectors in a clean station. We check: the clearance of the piston in the cylinder (Delphi standard: below 2 μm), the condition of the nozzle seat and needle, the resistance of the BEBE solenoid valve coil, the condition of the shaft seal and the control valve spring.
Stage 3 – Replacing Delphi OEM components
We use original Delphi repair kits (7135-577 / 7135-578 / 7135-652 for the E3 series) or certified OEM replacements. Each replaced part is registered in the BEBE number service card.
Stage 4 – Calibration and post-test
Calibration of spacers with 1 μm precision. Post-test on the Bosch EPS 815 table – acceptance only with results of ±2% from Delphi/Volvo standards. The customer receives a report on both tests.

Why is Delphi E3 regeneration worth attention?
The cost of a new Delphi E3 BEBE unit injector from the official Volvo Parts network is a significant expense - especially when replacing a set of 6 or 8 cylinders. Regeneration allows you to restore factory parameters at a fraction of the price, with a 12-month warranty and a documented test report. With regular inspection and replacement of oil and fuel filters according to the Volvo schedule - regenerated E3s work flawlessly for another 400,000-600,000 km.
FAQ
Are Delphi E3 unit injectors from Volvo B9TL and B12B identical?
No - B9TL with D9B uses Delphi BEBE4D24001, and B12B with D12D - BEBE4D18001. These are different series with different plungers and dosing parameters. We always identify the BEBE type by the engine number and vehicle model.
Is calibration via VCADS PRO necessary after regeneration of the Volvo D13B UI?
Yes - after installing regenerated UIs, we recommend performing the "Cylinder cut-out" procedure and dose balancing by Volvo VCADS PRO. The UI itself does not change electronic codes, but the controller calibration allows you to achieve optimal engine operating parameters.
What is BEBE and is it a serial or catalog number?
BEBE is the designation prefix for Delphi unit injectors used by Volvo (e.g. BEBE4D24001). This is both the catalog number and the basis for the serial number - the hull of each UI is engraved with a serial number in the BEBE-XXXXXXXXXX format, unique for each piece.
Can I send unit injectors from the 8-cylinder D16G in one shipment?
Yes – we accept sets of 6 and 8 pieces in one shipment. The carton should be large enough and each UI wrapped individually in bubble wrap and marked with a cylinder number. For 8-cylinder engines, the delivery time may be up to 7 business days - please contact us before shipping.
