What is a unit injector and why is it a critical engine element?
The unit injector, also called the Unit Injector - UI, is an element that combines the functions of a high-pressure pump and an injector in one housing. This system is used, among others, by Volvo Trucks andRenault Trucks in their truck engines of the D9, D12, D13, D16 (Volvo) and DXi7, DXi11, DXi13 (Renault) series.
Unlike Common Rail systems, where a central pump powers the fuel rail, in the Unit Injector system each cylinder has its own built-in pump, controlled mechanically by the camshaft and electrically by the engine control unit (ECU). The injection pressure generated directly in the injector reaches up to 2,200 bar - which means that the precision of workmanship and the technical condition of each component has a direct impact on engine power, fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.
Due to this complexity, regeneration of unit injectors requires specialized equipment, knowledge and experience. A-Core Diesel Serwis provides these services for Volvo and Renault trucks - both for customers from Silesia and as part of a shipping service from all over Poland.

Symptoms of unit injector damage - how to recognize them?
Failure of unit injectors in Volvo and Renault truck engines is rarely sudden. Most often, it is a slow degradation of precise friction elements - the needle, piston and control valve. Early recognition of symptoms allows you to regenerate one or two cylinders instead of replacing the entire set.
Typical symptoms of a damaged unit injector
- Engine vibration at idle speed - clearly noticeable shaking of the entire cabin, especially after cold start
- Black or gray smoke – uneven fuel combustion in a given cylinder
- Loss of power – the engine does not achieve its nominal power, especially when loaded or climbing a hill
- Increased fuel consumption – faulty injection causes incomplete combustion and burning of excessive amounts of diesel oil
- Clapping or clicking from the cylinder head area - the characteristic sound of a damaged UI
- ECU error codes indicating deviations of injection parameters in a specific cylinder
- Increased oil temperature – a damaged UI causes back leakage, increasing friction and temperature
- Difficult starting – especially at temperatures below 0°C or after a long standstill

Unit injector regeneration process – stage by stage
UI regeneration is a multi-stage procedure that requires precision comparable to that of a watchmaker. At A-Core Diesel Serwis, each unit injector goes through the same, repeatable process path - regardless of whether it comes from a Volvo D12, Renault DXi11 or another model.
Stage 1 – Admission and initial diagnostics
After disassembly from the vehicle (or after receipt by courier), each UI is registered with a serial number and catalog number. We perform external inspection: we check the condition of the nozzle seat, mounting flange, solenoid valve and power cables. Initial diagnostics allows you to estimate the scope of regeneration before disassembling the injector.
Stage 2 – Cold parameter test (pre-test)
Each UI goes to the testing table, where we measure its parameters in the state in which it arrived on the website. We register:
- Injection dose at operating pressure and idle speed
- Back-leak test
- Solenoid response time
- Volvo/Renault nominal values
Pre-test results are documented and compared to post-test results after recovery.
Stage 3 – Disassembly in clean conditions
The unit injector is dismantled in a station with controlled air purity. None of the precision elements may come into contact with mechanical impurities or moisture. Each part is described and arranged in a specific order for a given serial number.
Stage 4 – Inspection and verification of components
Under magnification and using measuring instruments, we check:
- Piston and cylinder – piston clearance (tolerance below 2 μm)
- Needle and nozzle seat – wear, condition, condition of sealing surface
- Control valve – clearance, patency of oil channels
- Solenoid valve – winding resistance, core and spring condition
- UI hull – cracks, thread damage, condition of fuel channels
Step 5 – Replacing worn components
We only replace components that do not meet Bosch/Delphi manufacturing standards. We use original service parts or certified OEM replacements. Each replaced part is registered in the service card of the given UI.
Step 6 – Assembly and calibration
The complex unit injector is calibrated with a precision of 1 μm. Adjusting the spacers determines the nozzle opening pressure and pilot injection dose. This is the stage that has the greatest impact on the quality and durability of regeneration.
Stage 7 – Final test on the test bench (post-test)
After assembly, each UI is re-tested according to the same procedures as the pre-test. We only accept results within a tolerance of ±2% from factory values. We issue the client a printout of the test report - both pre-test and post-test - as confirmation of the quality of the regeneration performed.

Volvo vs. Renault – differences in UI systems and what it means for regeneration
Although both brands use a similar Unit Injector concept, in service practice there are significant technical differences that affect the course and difficulty of regeneration:
| Feature | Volvo (D12/D13) | Renault (DXi11/DXi13) |
|---|---|---|
| UI Provider | Bosch (older) / Delphi (newer) | Delphi E3 / Bosch EUI |
| UI drive | Camshaft - roller tappet | Camshaft - roller tappet |
| Max. injection pressure | up to 2,200 bar (D13) | up to 2,200 bar (DXi13) |
| Solenoid valve control | ECU Volvo EDC | ECU Renault EECU |
| Typical weak points | Piston, needle (D12 after 600,000 km) | Control valve, seal (DXi11) |
| Parts availability | Good – Bosch, Delphi, BEBE | Good – Delphi E3 kit |
| Calibration codes after regeneration | Required in VCADS PRO | Required in DAVIE |

Why regeneration and not replacement?
The decision between regeneration and purchasing a new unit injector should be primarily an economic and ecological decision. New UI from OEM manufacturers (Bosch, Delphi) means very high costs - especially when several cylinders are damaged at the same time. Regeneration allows you to restore factory parameters for a fraction of this amount.
What is important - regeneration by a certified service is not a quality compromise. A properly regenerated unit injector works with the same precision as a new one, confirmed by an objective test report on a test bench. At A-Core, we provide a 12-month warranty for each regeneration.
Frequently asked questions - FAQ
Can older generation Volvo D12 unit injectors (Euro 2/3) be regenerated?
Yes. D12C and D12D engines with Bosch UIDR/UIDE systems are regularly serviced by us. Parts for these systems are available and the regeneration itself is well documented. These are some of the most graceful UIs to regenerate due to their simpler structure than the newer Delphi E3.
How many unit injectors are worth returning at the same time?
We always recommend regenerating thecomplete set (all cylinders at the same time), even if one or two UIs show worse parameters. The difference in injection times between new or regenerated and used UI causes uneven engine operation and accelerates the wear of other elements.
Is it necessary to reprogram the controller after UI regeneration?
Volvo vehicles require calibration via VCADS PRO (cylinder cut-out mode and dose balancing). In Renault, similarly byDAVIE. Mechanical regeneration itself does not change the UI codes - but the actual injection parameter changes, therefore calibration after installation is recommended for optimal performance.
What are the causes of premature wear of unit injectors?
The most common causes are: contaminated fuel (mechanical particles, water), replacing fuel and oil filters too rarely, operation at very low temperatures without a warm-up period, and in the case of Delphi systems - the use of engine oil that does not meet ACEA E4/E7 standards.
Do you accept UI from construction vehicles and machinery?
Yes - in addition to trucks, we service unit injectors from construction and agricultural machines and generators equipped with Volvo Penta, Deutz, Cummins, Perkins and other engines. Please contact us by phone before shipping to confirm the possibility of supporting a given UI type.
How to pack and ship unit injectors?
Each UI should be wrapped in bubble wrap or placed in a string bag and secured in a box with filling. Please include with your shipment: vehicle model, year of production, engine, number of kilometers traveled and description of symptoms. Before shipping, please contact us by phone or e-mail.
