Symptoms of injection pump failure – how to recognize a problem with the diesel pump?
Don't know if you have a problem with the injection pump? Check the list of symptoms of a diesel pump failure: difficult starting, lack of power, smoking, engine stalling and other symptoms.
Symptoms of Diesel Injection Pump Failure – How to Recognize the Problem?
The injection pump is the heart of the fuel system in a diesel engine. Its failure manifests itself in a specific way, which is worth knowing so as not to delay a visit to the service center. Early diagnosis helps avoid costly engine repairs.
The most common symptoms of VP44 injection pump failure
- Lack of power - the engine does not reach full speed, responds poorly to gas
- Black or white smoke from the exhaust pipe when accelerating
- Difficult starting - the engine turns the starter for a long time before it starts
- Uneven engine operation at idle speed
- Sudden engine stop while driving
- Increased fuel consumption for no apparent reason
OBD2 error codes indicating the injection pump
| Brand | Error code | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Opel / Saab | P1631 | VP44 controller damaged |
| VW / Audi | 00550 | VP44 pump controller damaged |
| VW / Audi | 00628 | Control transistor failure |
| VW / Audi | 01268 | No fuel injection coil control |
| Ford | P0216 | Fuel dosing fault |
When is regeneration needed and when is replacement needed?
Most VP44 pump failures are due to damage to the controller (transistor, PCB) or wear of mechanical components (dosing valve, seals). Regeneration is cheaper than replacing a new pump and is equally effective while maintaining the appropriate quality of repair.
How do we diagnose the pump in A-Core?
- Reading error codes with an OBD2 diagnosticscope
- Mechanical test on the Bosch EPS 715 test bench
- Measurement of EDC controller parameters in an electronics laboratory
- Full diagnostic report for the customer
